Other Upcoming Events!

Here soon I will have some finalized dates for some other events.

I’m hoping to have some sessions outside our regular club meetings where players looking more seriously to improve have an opportunity to do so. These will be targeting some feedback I’ve gotten from some intermediate players, so the level of play being discussed will cater to them. That being said, all are welcome to these. I will likely give out some “homework” at these meetings and bring a prepared topic for discussion. If this interests you, please comment below or reach out at jacob@cvillechess.org.

In our more immediate future, I’m hoping to have more of a variety session at Wabash in the near future. I am finalizing dates and times and things, but we finally have some good contacts for at least one venue outside the library. This should open up longer sessions and hopefully more days of the week for us.

Any other feedback is welcome. Contact me at jacob@cvillechess.org. Otherwise, I will make another post here soon referring back to these events.

Thanks!

World Championship Watch Party

November 28th – I’ll be hosting a watch party at the library all day (from 10-430 approx) in our regular meeting room D. Sindarov vs Gukesh round 4 starts at 9am, so they’ll be about an hour into the game by the time we get downstairs. My hope is to set up at least one demo board as well as the projector so that we can follow the current game live, and we can discuss the previous 3 games from the week in the interim. We’ll have access to our regular boards as well, so if anyone wants to play some casual games, they are more than welcome.

Anyone is welcome! I’m not looking to make it a formal potluck or anything per se, but feel free to bring some food for everyone to enjoy. I’m planning on bringing some stuff so that we can keep our brains fueled. Not sure what yet, so feel free to comment some suggestions down below.

I plan on yapping my lips off about my thoughts on the game, so if you just want to sit in for some extended commentary without participating, there’s room for that too!

I’m not expecting a huge turnout, but if I don’t have at least a couple of homies there by 11, I will return to the comfort of my home to finish watching the game.

I expect the game to go quite long, but we may end up leaving before 430. If we have time after the game finishes, we can always fill the time with more analysis or some games.

I will include the rules for the World Championship below for reference.

Two players: the reigning World Champion and the challenger.

Players compete in a 14-game match Time control: 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 more minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move 41.

Players cannot draw by agreement before move 41 The player with the most points at the end of the match wins and is crowned FIDE World Chess Champion.

September Mock Rated Event!

Hello again!

Our August tournament went well, and I’ve got another date secured for an event in September. I also have some good leads on venues that will give us the option to do some rated events (soon, I hope!).

The schedule will be the same as the August edition. See below for details.

Location: Crawfordsville Library in Meeting Room D.

Registration ends at 10:30 so that we have time to go over rules, so get there ASAP (the library opens at 10).

This is just a mock tournament, so no entry fee or sign up required.

We will be following the same rules as a typical USCF rated event (with more leniency). I will go over the rules before the first round, so if you’re interested, just show up the day of, and we will find someone for you to play!

If at all possible, please bring a board set with pieces and a clock. We have quite a few, but bring em if you have em just to be safe.

We’ll be doing 4 rounds of 25+5 time control with the following (approximate) round times:

Round 1: 11am

Round 2: 12pm

LUNCH BREAK until 2pm

Round 3: 2pm

Round 4: 3pm

I expect the event to wrap up between 3:45 and 430pm. If for whatever reason you can play some rounds, but not all, feel free to let me know onsite that day or you can message me here. If anyone has any other questions you can reach out here or email me at jacob@cvillechess.org

Thanks!

Next Saturday Mock Rated Tournament in August

July looks like a very busy month for the library and myself. The first Saturday is closed for the holiday, and the second Saturday is the book sale in the basement, which would make our lives pretty hard.

That being said, the last 2 Saturdays of the month I will be playing in USCF tournaments myself. Feel free to join me in Chicago for the Class Championships or in Indy on the 25th for the free rated event at the library.

I did get a room reservation on August 15th at our library for our next Mock Rated event, though. I will include all of the details below.

Our Lichess Team!

A few of the members wanted to connect online (also what pushed me to go ahead and get this site up and running), so we set up a team on Lichess: https://lichess.org/team/cville-chess-club

I’d love to have some correspondence tournaments ran on there (something I have to work on setting up myself as Lichess itself doesn’t have a native feature for this). I’m still bouncing around some other ideas for what to do with it, but posting game analysis on the forum there and getting opinions from others in the club seems like a good start.

Study for the Stuck Amateur

Several members of the club have expressed interest in taking their improvement seriously. I was getting lots of questions that made me feel like it was probably a good idea to make some sort of program for improvement up to around 1500 elo. While probably not the best tool for the job, I did use the Lichess Study feature to go ahead and get a my thoughts down.

I will include a link the Study below.
