Typically, this will be conversational in nature. Once we establish what motivates you and what you’re looking to achieve, we will establish a gameplan for improvement.

In regular sessions, we will look at games to get to what truly hinders your improvement. Once we acknowledge what needs to be worked on, I will offer a method of treatment. This will vary case by case. I will not give generic advice such as “learn the London System” or “you need to work on your endgames.” We will learn, together, exactly what issues you are having, and then I will give specific guidance on how we can remedy the issue. Furthermore, I will show you how to confirm the results of our training so that you can appreciate your own ability to improve. This reinforces the process and builds confidence (but not ego).

Know that lots of improvement in Chess is best done in isolation. For those that find this to be a lonely, boring, or otherwise insufferable endeavor, I will alternate our sessions between analysis and application. In this way, you will not be prescribed “homework,” but we will instead work together in our sessions to understand the plan for improvement, and to implement that plan.

Playing Experience

I learned the game when I was only 5-6 years old, around 2005. I never knew about the world of competitive Chess until around 2016. I played some online around that time, but I didn’t really start learning Chess until 2021, when I started going to OTB (over the board) tournaments. I’ve been hooked ever since.

My structured approach to learning the game has given me a fundamental understanding that is easy to pass on to others. Although my skill ceiling is not as high as the best players in the world, I can articulate high level concepts and teach fundamentals at the highest caliber.

Teaching Experience

I used to live in Avon, IN, where I taught chess at several Indianapolis schools after hours. Students ranged from kindergarten to 4th graders.

Nowadays, I run the local club in Crawfordsville and give on-on-one lessons when I can. I would like to expand the club to include more group lessons, more events, etc, but this is where we are currently.

Best Skills

I think the most important thing in Chess is to have fun. It is a game after all. Many people equate having fun to instant gratification, but I see it differently. The maximum amount of fun I have playing Chess is when I am playing at what I feel is my peak ability, in a tournament setting, and I’m winning. You really can’t control that. But what you can control is your level of practice, your mindset, and the effort you put into the game. Those things will help you have the most fun that you can. I believe in this approach to the game. I believe it is the most rewarding.

This mindset is my best skill. If you lose sight of why you play the game, or you don’t know how to keep those things in order, then you won’t want to be a part of this community, part of the game. You won’t want to play at all. I can show you how to find the right recipe for yourself that will keep all these things in balance, and you’ll improve tremendously.

Inspiration is more important than scale.
